Nigerian gaming company Maliyo Games’ most popular offering is Okada Ride, a smart and engaging mobile game designed to emulate the experience of cutting through traffic in the busy streets of Lagos.
The game takes its name from the nickname given to motorbikes that dash through the urban or country roads all over Nigeria. In Okada Ride, the player finds himself darting through traffic in Lagos, avoiding obstacles such as the incoming traffic, potholes, hawkers and bribe-seeking policemen. “We wanted to use the game as an engine to share African experiences between ourselves and with the rest of the world through African narratives, sounds and characters,” says co-creator of Maliyo Games Hugo Obi. The company has released several games that draw from the local experience to create unique gaming experiences. The company takes advantage of the African continent’s fast growing mobile internet-usage, and has become one of the most popular and successful African game developers.
