Designer and illustrator Kabelo Ramasobane originally conceived the Gaborone Couple project as a wedding present for friends from neighbouring Botswana.
Both portraits – of a man and a woman – give an important role to the characters’ hairstyles. In a style that, for Ramasobane, is representative of the night before a wedding, it is possible to observe the returning trend for natural hair, particularly in the woman’s figure. The trend goes back to the African Renaissance Movement, which was observed immediately after independence. In Ramasobane’s illustrations, this element is combined with retro design, resulting in a double portrait that represents the style of an urban, confident middle class.
